ShoreSure ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our website, web app, and mobile application.

Information We Collect

ShoreSure is designed with privacy in mind. We collect minimal information necessary to provide our service.

Information Stored Locally

  • User preferences: Favourite beaches and display preferences
  • Cached data: Recent tide predictions, swim quality grades, and weather conditions for faster loading

Information Retrieved from Third Parties

ShoreSure fetches publicly available data from the following sources to provide its core functionality:

  • NIWA (National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research): Tide time predictions and tidal heights for NZ locations
  • LAWA (Land, Air, Water Aotearoa): Swim suitability and water quality grades for monitored beaches
  • Weather data: Current conditions and forecasts for beach locations

When you use the web app, request parameters such as coordinates or location queries are sent to ShoreSure-managed API endpoints, which validate inputs, apply rate limits, and fetch data from upstream providers. We do not use that infrastructure to create user accounts or build personal profiles.

Information We Do NOT Collect

We want to be clear about what we don't do:

  • We do not require you to create an account
  • We do not build personal profiles
  • We do not track your precise device location
  • We do not sell personal information
  • We do not display advertising

How Your Data Is Used

Your locally stored preferences and cached data are used solely to improve your experience within the app. When you use the web app, ShoreSure processes request parameters and short-lived technical data needed to return tide, swim-quality, and weather data securely and to protect the service from abuse.

Any preferences or cached data stored on your device are:

  • Stored only on your device
  • Used solely to improve your experience within the app
  • Never used for advertising or account profiling

Data Security

We implement industry-standard security measures:

  • Encrypted Communication: All API calls use HTTPS encryption
  • Input Validation & Rate Limiting: The web app validates requests and applies basic rate limits to protect the service
  • Minimal Data Collection: We only process what is necessary to provide a fast, reliable experience

Third-Party Services

ShoreSure connects to NIWA, LAWA, weather data providers, and supporting proxy infrastructure used to retrieve that public data. Your use of these services is governed by their respective privacy policies and terms of service. We do not integrate with any advertising networks or data brokers.

Website Analytics

Our marketing website uses Google Analytics to understand visitor traffic. Google Analytics collects anonymous usage data such as page views, referral sources, and approximate location (country/city level). This data is not linked to any ShoreSure account, because ShoreSure does not require one. You can opt out of Google Analytics by using a browser extension. The core ShoreSure app experience does not include advertising trackers.

Data Retention

Locally stored app data remains on your device until you clear it. You can remove it at any time by:

  • Clearing the app cache within your device or browser settings
  • Removing site storage for the web app or uninstalling the mobile app

Short-lived web-app rate-limit state is retained in memory only long enough to protect the service from abuse and is automatically cleared on a rolling basis.

Children's Privacy

ShoreSure is not intended for use by children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date.

Your Rights

Since ShoreSure does not maintain user accounts or personal profiles, there is very little personal data for us to provide, modify, or delete. Any preferences stored locally remain under your control on your own device or browser.
